For some time now, some of us have wondered why the government continues to harrass the "little fish" and lets the "big ones" get away. In particular, we wondered why they seize some innocent grandparent's home that happens to have a pot-smoking grandson in the upstairs bedroom, but ignores ocean going cruise ships and the AT&T Long distance telephone service. Whatever the logic is for stealing the aging grandparent's home, the same ought to be applicable to say, the Waldorf in New York.
Apparently they are finally seeing the possibilities. Several recent newspaper articles have reported that the Feds seized a Red Carpet Inn in Houston because there has allegedly been some drug activity in the motel rooms. See the 3/6/1998 article, "Seizure of hotel sets precedent" from the Houston Chronicle for more details.
Just think where this can go! There is not a hotel in America in which we can be sure that no illegal activity has ever taken place! I believe that the government can use this well established legal approach to acquire all the hotels, phone companies, and most other commercial assets in the USA. Without ever firing a shot!
